The iPhone Duo's 7.6″ inner screen has a replaceable top cover layer: the nano-texture surface that cuts glare and makes the crease less visible. It is part of the display, not packaging.
Apple has designed it to be replaced when worn. With AppleCare+, a cover layer replacement is listed at $19 on Apple's service site, according to AppleInsider.
Do not peel it off, and do not add another protector over it. Protect the 5.4″ outer screen instead.
This was the open question for anyone buying Apple's first foldable. Folding phones from other makers ship with a film on the inner screen that is part of the display, and early owners famously peeled them off and broke their screens. On 1 October the answer arrived for the iPhone Duo — and it is better news than most people expected. The layer is there, it is designed as a wear part, and replacing it is cheap.
What the cover layer is
Apple's specifications describe the iPhone Duo's inner screen as a 7.6″ Super Retina XDR OLED with a nano-texture finish. Reporting since then has made clear that the nano-texture is not etched into the screen itself. It is a separate top cover layer sitting over the folding display.
It does three jobs:
- Cuts glare. The nano-texture scatters reflections, which matters on a large screen you use in daylight.
- Hides the crease. Reporting describes the finish as making the centre fold less visible.
- Takes the wear. Fingers, nails and repeated folding wear the top surface first. On the Duo, that surface is a part you can have replaced.
Why Apple made it replaceable
Every folding screen wears at its surface, because unlike glass it has to bend. Apple's answer is to make the outermost layer a service part. According to reporting on an interview with Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, the cover layer was designed to last as long as possible, and then to be replaceable — including to restore the surface or reduce the look of the crease after wear.
That changes how you should think about the inner screen. Light scuffs and wear on its surface are no longer a reason to replace the whole display. They are a reason to have the cover layer swapped.
What repairs cost with AppleCare+
Before 1 October, nobody knew what an iPhone Duo screen repair would cost. These are the AppleCare+ service fees as shown on Apple's US service site and reported by AppleInsider. They are the amounts you pay per claim if you have AppleCare+.
| Repair | With AppleCare+ | Without AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Inner screen cover layer | $19 | Not published |
| Outer display | $29 | Not published |
| Back glass | $29 | Not published |
| Inner display | $99 | Not published |
| Other accidental damage | $99 | Not published |
| Theft or loss | $149 | Not applicable |
Two things this tells you. First, the gap between a $19 cover layer and a $99 inner display claim is exactly why you should never damage the cover layer by trying to remove it or stick something over it: done right, wear costs $19; done wrong, it can cost the whole screen. Second, Apple has still not published what any of these repairs cost without AppleCare+. On a $1,999 first-generation foldable, that unknown is the strongest argument for buying AppleCare+ in your first week.

What happens if you peel it
There is a precedent. When Samsung's first Galaxy Fold reached reviewers in 2019, several peeled off what looked like a shipping film on the inner screen. It was the display's protective top layer, and the screens failed. Samsung changed its packaging and setup instructions to warn owners not to remove it. Apple's layer is a different part made by a different company, but the lesson is the same: on a folding phone, if a film covers the inner screen edge to edge and has no pull tab, it is part of the display.
What about people who prefer a glossy screen? Some early viewers have noted that the nano-texture makes colours slightly less vivid and blacks less deep than a glossy finish, and a few have suggested swapping it. Our advice is not to. The layer is engineered for this display, and Apple has not offered a glossy alternative. Adding a glossy third-party film on top creates a new set of problems: lifting at the crease, blocking the under-display camera, and covering the anti-glare finish you paid for.
Found a film on your Duo?
Peel it or leave it?
Answer three questions about the film you have found.
1. Which screen is it on?
2. Does it have a pull tab or printed text?
3. Does it reach right to the edges, under the frame?
Unboxing: what to check before you start
- Peel only obvious shipping wrap. The outer wrapping and any film on the back or outer screen with a printed pull tab are packaging. Anything clear, plain and edge-to-edge on the inner screen is not.
- Open and close it a few times before setup. The fold should move smoothly and evenly, and the halves should meet flat.
- Look across the inner screen at an angle. Check for scratches, dust under the surface or lifting at the edges. Problems are easiest to raise on day one.
- Check both screens light up evenly once it is switched on, including across the fold.
- Fit an outer screen protector next, on the bare phone, before the case.
- Then fit the case and confirm the phone still closes flat.
Our full first week setup checklist covers the rest, day by day.
The screen that does need a protector
Here is the practical upshot. The inner screen arrives with its own protective layer and spends most of its life folded shut, facing itself. The 5.4″ outer screen has no comparable replaceable layer reported, faces your pocket and keys all day, and is the screen you touch most. That is the one to protect.
| Inner 7.6″ screen | Outer 5.4″ screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Factory protection | Replaceable nano-texture cover layer | Ceramic Shield 2 |
| Exposure | Faces inward when folded | Faces pockets, keys and the ground |
| Add a protector? | No | Yes |
| AppleCare+ fee if damaged | $19 cover layer, $99 display | $29 |
| Best protection | Close it on nothing; a case with raised edges | A screen protector |
3-Pack Outer Screen Protector for iPhone Duo
$19.95
For the 5.4″ outer screen only. Apple sells no screen protector for the Duo, and we deliberately do not make one for the inner screen — its cover layer is already doing that job. Three in the pack, so a scratched one is replaced in a minute.

Magnetic Hinge Protection Case for iPhone Duo
$49.95
Raised edges keep the open inner screen off flat surfaces, and spine cover protects the hinge. Nothing on the case touches or presses on the inner screen, so the phone still closes flat on its cover layer.

Full Protection Kickstand Case With Stylus for iPhone Duo
$49.95
Full spine wrap and side protection for heavy use, plus a kickstand and stylus. Writing with a stylus rather than a fingernail is also kinder to the cover layer.

- Close it on nothing. A crumb or grain of grit closed inside the phone presses straight into the cover layer.
- Fingertips, not nails. Nails are the most likely everyday cause of marks on a soft top layer.
- Dry microfibre only. Apple has not published cleaning guidance for the nano-texture finish. Until it does, avoid wipes, sprays and alcohol.
- Keep it off the table when open. A case with raised edges stops the open screen resting on hard surfaces.
- When it looks worn, book a replacement rather than covering it with a film.
Frequently asked questions
Does the iPhone Duo come with a screen protector?
Its inner screen has a replaceable nano-texture cover layer that does the job of a screen protector and is part of the display. The 5.4″ outer screen has no comparable layer reported; it uses Ceramic Shield 2 and should be protected with a screen protector.
Should I peel the film off the iPhone Duo's inner screen?
No. The inner screen's top layer is the nano-texture cover layer, which is part of the display. Peeling it risks damaging the screen beneath. Only remove packaging with an obvious pull tab or printed text.
Can the iPhone Duo inner screen layer be replaced?
Yes. Apple designed the cover layer to be replaceable. With AppleCare+, the replacement is listed at $19 on Apple's US service site, as reported by AppleInsider. Replacement is expected to go through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Can I replace the iPhone Duo cover layer myself?
Apple has not published instructions for owners to remove or replace it, and has not said whether it will sell the part through Self Service Repair. Use Apple or an authorised provider.
How much does it cost to repair the iPhone Duo screen?
With AppleCare+, reported US service fees are $19 for the inner cover layer, $99 for the inner display and $29 for the outer display. Apple has not published prices without AppleCare+.
Can I put a glossy screen protector on the iPhone Duo inner screen?
We advise against it. A film over the cover layer can lift at the crease, interfere with the under-display front camera and touch response, and covers the anti-glare finish. Apple offers no glossy alternative.
What does the nano-texture layer do?
It reduces glare, makes the centre crease less visible, and acts as a replaceable wear surface protecting the folding display beneath.
How should I clean the iPhone Duo's inner screen?
With a dry microfibre cloth. Apple has not published cleaning guidance for the nano-texture finish, so avoid wipes, sprays and alcohol.
