The first iPhone Duo has not even reached customers it ships on 23 October and the second one is already leaking. Analysts, supply-chain reports and leakers have been talking about Apple's next foldable since before the first was announced, and the claims range from well-sourced to wishful.
This page collects every iPhone Duo 2 rumor we can trace to a named source, grades each one on how much weight it deserves, and compares what is expected against the iPhone Duo you can order on 16 October. It also answers the question most people searching this actually have: should you buy the first Duo now, or wait?
Release date: most likely September–October 2027, alongside Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and leaker Digital Chat Station all point to 2027; a spring 2027 claim exists but is the weakest of the bunch.
Biggest expected upgrades: a third rear camera, refinements to the display and hinge, a newer chip. Face ID and a telephoto lens are wanted but may take until a third generation.
Apple has confirmed nothing. Even the name “iPhone Duo 2” is unofficial.

iPhone Duo 2 release date: three scenarios
No source has given a date. What exists is a set of claims about the window, and they do not all agree.
| Scenario | Who says so | Tier | Our read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027, alongside the 20th-anniversary iPhone | Ming-Chi Kuo (second half of 2027); Mark Gurman, Bloomberg (2027); Digital Chat Station (fall 2027, project approved) | 🔵 Credible | Three independent sources with long records agree. The default expectation. |
| Spring 2027, freeing the fall event for the anniversary iPhone | Majin Bu, who put it at “80%” when asked | 🟡 Rumor | Would give the first Duo a roughly six-month life, which would be very unusual. Majin Bu did correctly leak the “Duo” name. |
| Late 2027 or 2028, if hinge supply stays tight | Inference from analyst Jeff Pu's note that hinge constraints cut 2026 Duo shipments | ⬜ Speculation | Possible if production problems persist, but no source predicts a delay. |
Why fall 2027 makes the most sense
- Apple's rhythm. Apple's flagship iPhones refresh roughly once a year. The first Duo launched in October 2026; a successor about a year later fits that pattern.
- Display supply. Samsung Display, reported as Apple's sole foldable-panel supplier, is said to be planning around 15 million foldable iPhone panels for 2027, up from about 8 million for 2026. That is a full-year ramp, not a six-month one.
- Two foldables at once. A February 2026 ETNews report said Apple would add a second foldable model in 2027 and sell it alongside the first. That matches a fall launch with the original Duo staying on sale.
Our best estimate: an announcement at Apple's September 2027 event, with preorders and availability between mid-September and late October 2027 — possibly a few weeks after the main iPhones again, as happened with the first Duo.

Cameras: the most likely visible change
The camera is the first Duo's clearest weakness. It has two 48MP cameras and no telephoto, so beyond 2x it relies on digital zoom — while the iPhone 18 Pro Max, at $700 less, has 4x and 8x telephoto lenses.
Two reports point to change. Leaker Majin Bu says the Duo 2 has three rear cameras, without saying what the third one is. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Face ID and a telephoto camera are priorities for future Duos, but that fitting them into such a thin body is hard — the implication being they may arrive in a later generation.
Display, and the nano-texture question
Digital Chat Station says the Duo 2 will likely reuse the first-generation display. That fits Samsung Display's dedicated production line and the expectation that bigger screens arrive with a third generation, which Gurman has tipped for as early as 2028.
The interesting wrinkle is the finish. The first Duo's inner screen carries a replaceable nano-texture cover layer — Apple lists replacement at $19 with AppleCare+, according to AppleInsider — which cuts glare and hides the crease but makes colours slightly less vivid than glossy glass. Majin Bu says Apple is considering a different display type that could drop the nano-texture. Treat that cautiously: Apple only just introduced the layer and built a service process around it.
Face ID and the chip
The first Duo uses Touch ID in the side button — the first flagship iPhone without Face ID in years, almost certainly because there was no room in a body 5.2 mm thick when open. Face ID is widely wanted, and Gurman lists it as a priority. A claim of a compact Face ID module behind the outer display exists, but traces to the same unsourced YouTube video. Our expectation: Touch ID again in 2027 is more likely than not.
On the chip, nothing specific has leaked. Apple's flagship iPhones move to a new A-series chip every year, so a successor to the A20 Pro is a safe expectation rather than a leak.
Price
There is no credible iPhone Duo 2 price report. The first Duo starts at $1,999 and reaches $3,199, the most Apple has charged for an iPhone. Two forces pull in opposite directions: component and memory prices drove up the cost of this year's iPhones, while a second year of production usually brings costs down. Reports of possible cheaper “Duo SE” variants suggest Apple may address price with additional models rather than by cutting the main one. Our expectation: a starting price in the same $1,999 range.
One Duo or a whole family?
The “Duo” name may have been chosen to leave room for variants. According to ChannelNews's account of Gurman's reporting, Apple could add a larger Duo Max, a cheaper Duo SE, and possibly a smaller clamshell-style model. ETNews reported earlier that Apple would sell two foldables side by side in 2027.
How accurate were the iPhone Duo 1 leaks?
The best guide to how much weight to give Duo 2 rumors is how the Duo 1 rumors turned out. Comparing pre-launch claims with what Apple announced:
| Pre-launch claim | What Apple announced | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Name: “iPhone Ultra” (widely expected); “iPhone Duo” (Majin Bu) | iPhone Duo | Majin Bu right, consensus wrong |
| Launch in fall 2026 | Announced 9 Sept, released 23 Oct | Right |
| Touch ID instead of Face ID | Touch ID in the side button | Right |
| Two rear cameras, no telephoto | 48MP Main and Ultra Wide | Right |
| Price around $2,000 (IDC modelled $2,500) | $1,999 | Mostly right; IDC too high |
| 7.8″ inner and 5.5″ outer displays | 7.6″ inner and 5.4″ outer | Close, but sizes wrong |
| MagSafe uncertain — dummy units showed no magnet ring | MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W | Dummies misleading |
| Supply constrained at launch | Shipments trimmed over hinge constraints | Right |
The lesson: big-picture claims — timing, unlock method, camera count, price band — were mostly right. Exact numbers like screen sizes were often slightly off, and physical dummy units were unreliable. Apply the same discount to Duo 2 leaks: trust the direction, not the decimals.
Buy the iPhone Duo now, or wait for the Duo 2?
Five questions
Answer all five for a recommendation.
1. What phone do you use today?
2. How much do you care about zoom photography?
3. Does Touch ID instead of Face ID bother you?
4. How do you feel about first-generation products?
5. Do you trade in your phone every year?
The case for buying now
- The Duo 2 is about a year away, and reports suggest it reuses the same display.
- Several of the most-wanted upgrades — Face ID, telephoto, bigger screens — are tipped for the third generation, not the second.
- If you upgrade yearly, you can trade the Duo in towards the Duo 2.
The case for waiting
- Second-generation devices usually fix first-generation compromises.
- Launch supply is tight, and hinge constraints have already cut shipments.
- If zoom photography matters to you, the first Duo has no telephoto at all.
Will iPhone Duo cases fit the iPhone Duo 2?
This is where we can be most useful, because case fit is all we think about.
Probably not, and you should not plan on it. Even when Apple keeps a display, small changes elsewhere make cases incompatible. The most-reported Duo 2 change — a third rear camera — would change the camera cutout on the back panel. On a folding phone, where a case has to clear the hinge and close flat within less than a millimetre, a few tenths of a millimetre anywhere is enough to stop a case fitting. Bigger screens, tipped for a third generation, would rule it out entirely.
| If the Duo 2… | Will a Duo 1 case fit? |
|---|---|
| Adds a third camera | No — the camera cutout changes |
| Changes thickness or hinge by even a fraction of a millimetre | No — it may not close flat |
| Moves buttons or Touch ID | No |
| Keeps identical dimensions, cameras and buttons | Possibly — confirm before buying |
Our plan: when Apple announces the Duo 2, we will publish its confirmed dimensions, set them against the first Duo, and state plainly which of our cases fit it and which do not. We will not sell a Duo 2 case until we have checked it against the confirmed dimensions.

Frequently asked questions
When is the iPhone Duo 2 coming out?
Apple has not announced it. The most widely reported window is fall 2027, alongside Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, Mark Gurman and Digital Chat Station. One leaker has claimed spring 2027, which would be unusually soon after the first Duo's October 2026 release.
Is the iPhone Duo 2 confirmed?
No. Apple has confirmed nothing about a second-generation iPhone Duo, and the name “iPhone Duo 2” is unofficial. Multiple analysts and supply-chain reports say a second foldable is planned for 2027.
What will be new in the iPhone Duo 2?
Reports point to a third rear camera, refinements to the hinge and display, and a newer chip. Leaker Digital Chat Station says it will likely reuse the first-generation display. Face ID and a telephoto camera are wanted, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggests they are hard to fit and may come later.
Will the iPhone Duo 2 have Face ID?
Uncertain. The first Duo uses Touch ID. Gurman lists Face ID as a priority for future Duos but says it is hard to fit in the thin body. A claim of Face ID behind the outer display comes from an unsourced YouTube video.
Will the iPhone Duo 2 have a telephoto camera?
Possibly. A leaker says the Duo 2 will have three rear cameras, without saying what the third is. Gurman says a telephoto is a priority but hard to fit. The first Duo has no telephoto.
How much will the iPhone Duo 2 cost?
There is no credible price report. The first Duo starts at $1,999. Reports of a possible cheaper Duo SE suggest Apple may address price with additional models.
Should I wait for the iPhone Duo 2?
If you want Face ID, a telephoto camera or a proven second-generation design, waiting makes sense — though some of those upgrades may not arrive until a third generation. If your current phone is struggling or you trade in yearly, buying the first Duo now is reasonable.
Will iPhone Duo cases fit the iPhone Duo 2?
Probably not. Even small changes — such as a third rear camera changing the camera cutout, or a fraction of a millimetre in thickness — stop a case fitting a folding phone. Wait for confirmed dimensions before assuming compatibility.
Will Apple make more than one foldable iPhone?
Reports suggest so. ETNews reported that Apple would sell a second foldable alongside the first in 2027, and Gurman has reportedly described possible Duo Max, Duo SE and smaller clamshell variants. None are confirmed.
