The iPhone Duo is the first iPhone that works with Apple Pencil. Open it and the 7.6″ screen is the size of a small notebook. But there are three catches most people only find after buying. Only the USB-C Apple Pencil works. Support isn’t switched on at launch. And the Duo has nowhere for a Pencil to attach. This guide explains what works today, what’s coming, where to keep your pen, and which case holds it.

- The Pencil that never was: Apple reportedly built a shorter Pencil that clipped to the Duo’s hinge, then scrapped it before production.
What works on day one: a capacitive stylus
A capacitive stylus has a soft conductive tip, often rubber, mesh or a fibre disc, and the screen reads it like a fingertip. No pairing, no charging, no software update. It’s less precise than an Apple Pencil and has no palm rejection or tilt, but for tapping, scrolling, signing and quick notes it works on the Duo today.
That’s why case pen slots matter: they keep a compact stylus with the phone, which an Apple Pencil can’t do.
Will an Apple Pencil fit in an iPhone Duo case?
No. The Apple Pencil (USB-C) is 155 mm long and 8.9 mm across. The folded Duo is 117.8 mm tall, so a Pencil can’t sit inside a slot built into a case without sticking out by about 37 mm. Case pen slots, ours included, are made for compact styluses.
The practical setup: keep a compact stylus in the case for everyday notes, and carry the Apple Pencil in a bag or pencil sleeve for longer writing and drawing once support arrives.

Writing on a folding screen: 5 rules
- Use a soft tip. Rubber, mesh or fibre-disc tips are gentle on Apple’s cover layer. Avoid hard plastic tips you’d drag hard across the screen.
- Don’t press on the crease. Write either side of the fold, or turn the phone so the crease runs between your lines. More on the crease.
- Write with the phone flat or on a stand. A stand stops the open Duo flexing at the hinge as you press.
- Protect the layer if you write a lot. A flexible film on top takes the wear of a stylus tip. What’s safe on the inner screen.
- Keep grit off the tip. A grain of sand on a stylus tip scratches like sandpaper. Wipe the tip now and then.
