What’s inside the iPhone Duo hinge
- More than 100 components, including carbon fibre support plates that help keep the display flat, according to Apple.
- A titanium hinge cover with a mirror-polished finish next to a micro-blasted one, reported as made from recycled titanium. Reports describe the hinge as mixing titanium and aluminium.
- No published fold rating. Apple hasn’t given a fold-cycle figure or a separate hinge repair price.
The mechanism inside is sealed and engineered to last. A case can’t make it fold more times. What a case can protect is the outside: the polished titanium cover, the edges of the spine, and the mechanism behind them from impact.
Why the hinge needs its own protection
- Folded, the spine is an outer edge. Drop the folded Duo on its side and, depending on which side lands, it’s the hinge that takes the hit, not the frame.
- Polished titanium shows marks. A mirror finish in a pocket with keys or coins picks up scuffs that a matte frame would hide.
- Grit collects at the spine. Dust and sand gather in the gaps where the hinge meets the two halves. A cover keeps the worst of it out.
- It’s the part regular cases skip. Many foldable cases are two pieces, one for each half, which leaves the spine bare. Some ultra-thin cases leave it bare on purpose to save thickness.

Looking after the hinge
- Take the case off every few weeks and wipe grit from the spine and from inside the hinge cover.
- Don’t force it past flat. If a case feels stiff at the fold, it’s the wrong fit. Stop and check it’s seated.
- Don’t mount it open. An open Duo on a magnetic mount hangs its weight off the hinge.
