Apple makes two cases for the iPhone Duo: a thin two-part iPhone Duo Case for $79 and a fabric Folio with Kickstand for $129. They’re the safe choice: designed alongside the phone, tested by Apple, and certified for MagSafe. But early hands-on reports point to real gaps on a foldable. The Case leaves the titanium hinge bare. The Folio hides the outer screen behind a flap and has patchy edge protection. Neither carries a card or offers more than two colours. We make cases for the Duo, so here’s an honest comparison: where Apple wins, where it doesn’t, and the alternative that fits what you need.
- Buy Apple’s Case ($79) if you want the thinnest Apple-certified shell and you’re careful with the hinge.
- Buy Apple’s Folio ($129) if you mostly use the Duo on a desk with the stand and don’t mind opening a flap to see the outer screen.
- Choose an alternative if you want the hinge covered, the outer screen protected and visible, cards, a ring grip or more colours. Ours start at $39.95.
- Our picks: Magnetic Hinge Protection Case ($49.95) instead of the Case; Woven MagSafe Stand Case ($59.95) instead of the Folio.

Where Apple’s cases win (honestly)
- Guaranteed fit. They were designed alongside the phone, and Apple says both went through thousands of hours of testing. No third-party case, ours included, could test on a retail Duo before today. We’re testing all 36 of ours now and publishing the results.
- Apple-certified charging. The Case is listed for MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W. Third-party magnetic cases work with MagSafe, but none of ours publishes a tested charging rate.
- Materials and finish. Matte polycarbonate and TechWoven are well made and match Apple’s look.
- The Folio’s stand charges on MagSafe while open, and it folds out in several orientations.
- Apple Store returns and support in person.
Where Apple’s cases fall short on a foldable
- The Case leaves the hinge bare. Two separate pieces let the hinge move, but early hands-on reports say the titanium spine stays exposed. Folded, that’s an outer edge running the full height of the phone. Why the hinge matters.
- The Case doesn’t protect the outer screen. Reports also say the open screen gets no protection when the phone lies flat.
- The Case’s halves stick on. Hands-on reports say the halves attach with adhesive film: secure, but a hassle to remove and refit. That matters on a foldable, where you take the case off to clean the hinge or apply an inner film.
- The Folio hides the outer screen. The flap covers it, so you open the cover to check the time or a notification. That defeats one of the Duo’s best features.
- The Folio’s edge protection is patchy, per early hands-on reports.
- No cards, no ring, no pen slot, two colours. Our range has 6 cases with cards, 20 with a ring or stand, and up to ten colours per case.

Frequently asked questions
How much is Apple’s iPhone Duo case?
Apple sells two: the iPhone Duo Case for $79 (matte polycarbonate, Sand or Navy Blue) and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand for $129 (TechWoven fabric, Taupe or Navy Blue).
Is Apple’s iPhone Duo Case worth $79?
If you want the thinnest Apple-certified shell and full MagSafe and Qi2 25W support, yes. But early hands-on reports say it leaves the hinge exposed and gives the outer screen no front protection, and the two halves attach with adhesive. If those matter to you, a case with hinge protection and front glass costs less.
Does Apple’s iPhone Duo case protect the hinge?
According to early hands-on reports, the two-part iPhone Duo Case leaves the titanium hinge exposed. Apple hasn’t specified hinge coverage for the Folio. 21 of Duo Case Co’s cases list hinge protection.
Does the Apple iPhone Duo Folio cover the outer screen?
Yes. Its front flap covers the outer screen, so you open it to see the time or notifications. Cases with built-in front glass protect the outer screen and keep it visible.
What is the best alternative to Apple’s iPhone Duo case?
For the $79 Case, the Duo Case Co Magnetic Hinge Protection Case ($49.95): hinge protection, a front screen protector frame and magnets. For the $129 Folio, the Woven MagSafe Stand Case ($59.95): a woven back, fold-out stand, front glass and magnets.
Do third-party iPhone Duo cases work with MagSafe?
Cases with built-in magnets do. They work with MagSafe chargers and accessories but aren’t Apple-certified, and Apple only guarantees its full 25W with its own accessories. 22 of Duo Case Co’s cases are magnetic.
Can I return an iPhone Duo case if it doesn’t fit?
Apple accepts returns under its own policy. Duo Case Co offers free worldwide shipping and 30-day returns on every case.
