iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which Should You Buy?

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: Which Should You Buy?

This is the decision most iPhone buyers are making this month. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is already in shops. The iPhone Duo goes on preorder on 16 October. They cost different amounts, they are different shapes, and they are good at different things — but working through Apple's published numbers turns up something neither company mentions.

They are almost exactly the same amount of phone. Folded, the iPhone Duo takes up within half a percent of the Pro Max's volume and weighs 5 grams more. Apple has packed the same bulk into two different shapes. The real question is not which phone is bigger, but how you want that bulk arranged — and whether that arrangement is worth $700.

The short answer

Buy the iPhone Duo if you read, watch, work or write on your phone, want the largest screen Apple makes in a pocketable device, and the $700 premium is comfortable.

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if photography — especially zoom — matters most, you want the longest battery life on your main screen, you prefer a proven design over a first-generation one, or $700 is better spent elsewhere.

Bold marks the stronger figure where one clearly exists. Both phones share the same chip, the same water rating, the same wireless charging and the same storage options — so the decision comes down to shape, screens, cameras and price.

Price: a flat $700 premium

Apple has priced the two phones exactly $700 apart at every storage tier. That makes the comparison unusually clean: whatever storage you need, the question is the same.

Storage iPhone 18 Pro Max iPhone Duo Difference Duo costs more by
256GB $1,299 $1,999 $700 54%
512GB $1,499 $2,199 $700 47%
1TB $1,899 $2,599 $700 37%
2TB $2,499 $3,199 $700 28%

Compare at your storage tier

$1,499iPhone 18 Pro Max
$2,199iPhone Duo
+47%Duo premium in percent

The $700 gap is the same at every tier, so it matters least at higher storage.

The useful way to read this: the $700 never changes, but it shrinks as a share of the price. At 256GB the Duo costs 54% more; at 2TB, 28% more. If you were already planning to buy a high-storage Pro Max, the Duo is proportionally a smaller step up.

Size: same bulk, different shape

This is the most surprising finding in the comparison, and you can check it yourself with Apple's numbers.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm = 111,520 mm³, 249 g
iPhone Duo, folded: 117.8 × 84.1 × 11.3 mm = 111,950 mm³, 254 g
Difference: 0.4% in volume, 5 g in weight

Volume here is the outer box each phone fits in, from Apple's published dimensions. Both phones carry the same amount of material, distributed differently. The Pro Max is long and thin; the folded Duo is short and thick.

18 Pro Max 78.0 × 163.4 mm 8.75 mm Duo folded 84.1 × 117.8 mm 11.3 mm Duo open 164.6 × 117.8 mm 5.2 mm Front views and edge thicknesses drawn to the same scale.
All three drawn to scale from Apple's published dimensions.
In the pocket iPhone Duo (folded) iPhone 18 Pro Max
Height 117.8 mm — 45.6 mm shorter 163.4 mm
Width 84.1 mm — 6.1 mm wider 78.0 mm
Thickness 11.3 mm — 2.55 mm thicker 8.75 mm
Front footprint 9,907 mm² — 22% smaller 12,745 mm²

What that means in practice. The folded Duo is 4.6 cm shorter, which matters in jeans, small bags and when you sit down — the Pro Max is the phone that pokes out of a back pocket. The Pro Max is thinner and slips into a tight pocket more easily. Same weight, so neither feels heavier, but the Duo's weight is concentrated in a smaller, denser shape.

Both get thicker with a case. A slim case takes the folded Duo to around 13.5 mm; see our iPhone Duo size and fit guide for the calculation.

Screens: bigger and smaller at once

Diagonal sizes mislead here, because the screens are different shapes. Screen area is the honest measure. Calculated from Apple's published diagonals and resolutions:

Duo inner 7.6″ 27.2 18 Pro Max 6.9″ 18.1 Duo outer 5.4″ 13.6 Screen area in square inches, full rectangle
Calculated from Apple's published diagonals and pixel dimensions, treating each screen as a full rectangle (rounded corners ignored).
Duo inner vs Pro Max: 27.2 vs 18.1 sq in — 50% more screen
Duo outer vs Pro Max: 13.6 vs 18.1 sq in — 75% of the Pro Max

This is the trade-off nobody puts in a headline. Open, the Duo gives you half as much screen again as the Pro Max. Folded, it gives you a quarter less. Which one you live with depends on how you use your phone.

  • If you open it for most things — reading, video, email, documents, maps — the Duo is the bigger phone by a wide margin, and the inner display's nano-texture finish cuts glare.
  • If you mostly use it closed — messages, quick replies, notifications, one-handed use on the move — you spend most of your day on a screen smaller than the Pro Max's.
  • Shape matters too. Open, the Duo is landscape and much squarer, at 1.4:1. Video fills it well, and two apps side by side work. The Pro Max is tall and narrow (about 2.2:1), which suits scrolling feeds.

Cameras: the biggest trade-off

Both phones share the same 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide approach. The difference is everything beyond that.

iPhone Duo iPhone 18 Pro Max
Main 48MP, 26 mm, ƒ/1.6 48MP, variable aperture ƒ/1.48–ƒ/4.0
Ultra Wide 48MP, 13 mm 48MP, 13 mm
Telephoto None 48MP 4x (100 mm) and 8x (200 mm)
Zoom range 2x optical-quality, up to 10x digital Optical-quality to 8x
Front camera 12MP on outer screen; under-display on inner screen, 1080p Front camera on main screen

If you photograph children at sport, concerts, wildlife, architecture or anything you cannot walk closer to, the Pro Max is the clear choice. The Duo has no telephoto lens at all; beyond 2x it is cropping digitally.

The front camera matters for video calls. The Duo's under-display camera on the inner screen is limited to 1080p, so a FaceTime call on the big screen will look softer than one on the outer screen. Use the outer screen's 12MP camera when image quality matters, or prop the open phone and accept the lower resolution for the larger view.

Battery: depends which screen you use

Video playback, Apple's figures Hours
iPhone Duo, outer 5.4″ screen Up to 44
iPhone 18 Pro Max Up to 43
iPhone Duo, inner 7.6″ screen Up to 31

Apple publishes two battery figures for the Duo, and the gap between them is the honest story. Used closed, the Duo matches the Pro Max. Used open, it lasts about 28% less. If you buy the Duo for the big screen — which is the reason to buy it — plan on the 31-hour figure, not the 44. That is still a full day for most people, but heavy users will want a charger or MagSafe battery to hand.

Both phones charge wirelessly through MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W. The Duo reaches 50% in about 20 minutes on a wired 60W or higher adapter.

Touch ID, Apple Pencil, SIM and charging

Touch ID instead of Face ID

The Duo unlocks with Touch ID in the side button; there is no Face ID. Apple Watch can also unlock it. If you have used Face ID for years, expect a short adjustment — though Touch ID works the same whether the phone is open or closed, and with a mask on.

Apple Pencil

The Duo supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) on its inner display. Apple does not list Apple Pencil support for the Pro Max. For students, designers and anyone who takes handwritten notes, this is a genuine reason to choose the Duo — a 7.6″ landscape screen is large enough to write on properly. The practical problem is carrying the pencil; neither of Apple's own Duo cases has anywhere to put one.

SIM

The Duo is dual eSIM only, in every country — no physical SIM slot anywhere. The Pro Max takes a nano-SIM in some regions. If you rely on physical SIM cards, for example buying local SIMs when travelling, the Duo requires a change of habit to travel eSIMs.

Charging and accessories

Both support MagSafe and Qi2 at 25W, so magnetic chargers, wallets and mounts work with both. On the Duo there is one catch: magnets can only sit in the back panel, so never magnetically mount the Duo while it is open — its full weight would hang from one half, levering on the hinge.

Durability and first-generation risk

iPhone Duo iPhone 18 Pro Max
Water and dust IP68, 6 m IP68, 6 m
Frame Titanium Aluminium
Moving parts Hinge None
Screen technology First Apple folding display Mature
Repair pricing published No Established
Design generation First Refined over many years

The Duo is well sealed — IP68 makes it dust-tight, which earlier foldables from other makers were not — and its titanium frame is stronger than the Pro Max's aluminium. But it is a first-generation device with a hinge and a folding display, and Apple has not published what repairs cost. The Pro Max has no moving parts and a well-understood repair path.

That is not a reason to avoid the Duo. It is a reason to protect it properly from day one if you buy one, and to think about AppleCare+.

How they compare in daily life

The iPhone Duo is better for

  • Reading, video and documents — 50% more screen
  • Handwritten notes — Apple Pencil support on the inner screen
  • Two apps side by side
  • Short pockets and small bags — 4.6 cm shorter
  • Video on a tray table or desk
  • Being the most interesting phone Apple has made in years

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is better for

  • Photography — 4x and 8x telephoto
  • Battery on the main screen — 43 h vs 31 h
  • Thin pockets — 2.55 mm thinner
  • Price — $700 less at every tier
  • Colour choice — four finishes vs two

Which one fits you?

Six questions, one recommendation

Answer all six. The bar moves as you go.

1. What would you miss more?

2. What do you mostly do on your phone?

3. Is the $700 difference comfortable?

4. Would you use an Apple Pencil?

5. How heavy a user are you?

6. How do you feel about first-generation products?

Cases and accessories: two different worlds

This part of the decision rarely makes it into comparisons, and it affects every day you own the phone.

iPhone Duo iPhone 18 Pro Max
Cases available A few dozen, from a handful of brands Thousands, from every brand
Apple's own cases 2: $79 Case, $129 Folio Silicone, TechWoven and Clear options
What a case must handle Two halves, a hinge, two screens One slab
Screen protection Outer screen only — never the folding inner screen One screen, any protector
Cost of a bad case Can stop it closing flat and strain the hinge Mostly cosmetic

If you choose the Pro Max, you will find a good case anywhere — Apple, Nomad, Spigen, Mous, PITAKA and many more all make excellent ones. We do not sell Pro Max cases, and you do not need a specialist for it.

If you choose the Duo, the case matters more than on any iPhone before it. It has to cover two halves without stopping the fold, protect the narrow spine that a slab phone does not have, and leave the outer screen usable. Generic foldable cases — made for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 — will not fit: the Duo is 2.2 mm wider, 6.1 mm shorter and 1.6 mm thicker folded. That is why we built a store around this one device.

Why take this comparison from a Duo case store

We told you when to buy the Pro Max — for zoom, for battery on the main screen, for a proven design, and to save $700 — and that you do not need a specialist to case it.

We published the Duo's weaker numbers: no telephoto, 31 hours on the inner screen, a 1080p inner front camera, an outer screen smaller than the Pro Max's.

Every figure is Apple's, and every calculation is shown so you can check it.

We know the Duo better than anyone selling cases for it, because it is the only device we sell for. If you choose it, that is where we are useful.

We have no affiliation with, sponsorship from or endorsement by Apple, and earn nothing from the sale of either phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone Duo better than the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

Neither is better outright. The Duo has a 7.6″ inner screen with 50% more area than the Pro Max's 6.9″, supports Apple Pencil and is 4.6 cm shorter folded. The Pro Max has 4x and 8x telephoto cameras, longer battery life on its main screen, a thinner body and costs $700 less.

How much more does the iPhone Duo cost than the Pro Max?

Exactly $700 more at every storage tier in the US: $1,999 against $1,299 at 256GB, rising to $3,199 against $2,499 at 2TB.

Is the iPhone Duo bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

It takes up almost exactly the same space. Folded, the Duo's volume is within 0.4% of the Pro Max and it weighs 5 g more, at 254 g against 249 g. It is 45.6 mm shorter, 6.1 mm wider and 2.55 mm thicker.

Which has the bigger screen?

Which has the better camera?

The Pro Max, for anything involving zoom. It has 4x and 8x telephoto cameras; the iPhone Duo has no telephoto lens and relies on digital zoom beyond 2x. Both have 48MP Main and Ultra Wide cameras.

Which has better battery life?

It depends which Duo screen you use. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback on the Duo's outer screen and 31 hours on its inner screen, against 43 hours for the Pro Max.

Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?

No. The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button, and can also be unlocked with an Apple Watch.
