Apple's first foldable goes on preorder on Friday 16 October at 5 a.m. Pacific and reaches customers on Friday 23 October. Supply is expected to be tight, which means the first batch will go to people who made their decisions before the window opened — not to people deciding at 5:01 a.m.
This guide makes those decisions with you in advance: which of the four storage tiers is actually worth it, which of the two colours to pick, what to set up in the Apple Store app before the day, the eSIM detail most buyers will miss, and what to order alongside the phone so it is protected on the day it arrives.
Storage: 512GB for most buyers. It doubles the base storage for $200; every step above that costs more per tier.
Colour: whichever you prefer — most owners will case it, so consider which case colours you like against it.
Before the 16th: set up your preorder in the Apple Store app from 12 October, and convert to eSIM if you still use a physical SIM.
Alongside it: a case and an outer screen protector, ordered now so they arrive with the phone.
Key dates and your local preorder time
Preorders open at the same moment worldwide. Here is what 5 a.m. Pacific on Friday 16 October means where you are:
| Location | Local preorder time, Friday 16 October |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles, San Francisco (PDT) | 5:00 a.m. |
| New York, Toronto (EDT) | 8:00 a.m. |
| London (BST) | 1:00 p.m. |
| Paris, Berlin, Madrid (CEST) | 2:00 p.m. |
| Dubai (GST) | 4:00 p.m. |
| India (IST) | 5:30 p.m. |
| Sydney, Melbourne (AEDT) | 11:00 p.m. |
Whether the phone ships to your country on 23 October or in the second wave on 30 October depends on Apple's regional list — check the Apple Store app for your country before preorder day.
The pre-preorder checklist
Apple lets you set up your iPhone Duo preorder in the Apple Store app from 12 October — colour, storage, carrier, AppleCare+, trade-in, payment, and shipping and billing addresses. With limited supply expected, a pre-built preorder is the difference between a first-batch delivery and a wait.
- 12 Oct: open the Apple Store app and build your orderColour, storage, carrier, AppleCare+ and trade-in, all chosen in advance.
- Confirm your payment method worksA $2,000+ purchase can trip a card's fraud check. Use a card you know has the limit, or tell your bank to expect it.
- Check your shipping address and delivery preferencesA $2,000 parcel may need a signature. Ship somewhere someone will be.
- Decide on trade-in before the dayHave your current phone's model and condition ready if you are trading in.
- Convert to eSIM if you use a physical SIMSee the eSIM section below — this is the step most buyers will miss.
- Back up your current phoneAn iCloud or computer backup made the night before makes setup quicker on the day.
- Order your case and screen protector nowSo they arrive with or before the phone. More below.
- 16 Oct: be signed in a few minutes earlyOpen the app before your local preorder time and submit as soon as it opens.
Which storage to buy
| Storage | US price | Step up costs | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 256GB | $1,999 | — | Light media users, heavy iCloud users, anyone upgrading again in two years |
| 512GB | $2,199 | +$200 | Most buyers — the best-value step |
| 1TB | $2,599 | +$400 | Regular 4K video shooters, large offline libraries, long ownership |
| 2TB | $3,199 | +$600 | Professional video work on the phone itself |
Why 512GB is the sweet spot
Look at what each step actually buys. Moving from 256GB to 512GB adds 256GB for $200. Moving from 512GB to 1TB adds 512GB for $400. Moving from 1TB to 2TB adds 1TB for $600. The cost per added gigabyte is broadly similar at each step — but the dollars you commit rise sharply, and most people never fill the higher tiers.
Questions that decide it
- How full is your current phone? Check Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If you are over half full on a 256GB phone today, buy 512GB.
- Do you shoot a lot of 4K video? Video fills storage far faster than photos. Regular video shooters should look at 1TB.
- Do you keep music, films or maps offline? Travellers with offline libraries benefit from more local storage.
- How long will you keep it? Storage needs grow over time. Planning three or more years? Size up one tier.
- Do you already pay for a large iCloud plan? If your library lives in the cloud and you are happy with that, 256GB goes further.
Star White or Night Sky
The iPhone Duo comes in two colours: Star White and Night Sky. Apple has not published finish details beyond the names, and nobody has seen either colour in daily use yet, so we will not pretend to know which shows wear better.
What we can say is practical: most owners will put a case on it, and on a folding phone a case covers more of the device than on a slab phone. So the colour you pick matters less than the colour you will see — which is often the case. Two things worth considering:
- Which case colours you like against it. Clear and frame-style cases show the phone's colour; solid cases hide it.
- Resale. If you trade in every year or two, a case keeps either colour in better condition, which matters more than the colour itself.
| Case finish | With Star White | With Night Sky |
|---|---|---|
| Clear with coloured frame | Shows the white; pick a frame colour you like | Shows the dark finish; silver or gold frames contrast |
| Brown or tan leather-finish | Warm, traditional | Classic dark-and-tan |
| Metallic gold or silver | Bright, cohesive | High contrast |
| Black | Strong contrast | Monochrome, understated |
The eSIM detail
Launch coverage reports that the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only — there is no physical SIM tray. Confirm on Apple's tech specs page for your region, because SIM arrangements can vary by market.
Two further points for travellers: buying local SIM cards abroad becomes buying local eSIMs, which most travel eSIM services support; and if you regularly swap SIMs between phones, that workflow changes.
AppleCare+, trade-in and carriers
AppleCare+
You can add AppleCare+ during preorder. Apple has not yet published iPhone Duo repair pricing for either display or the hinge, and on a first-generation device with a new folding display and hinge, repair costs are the least predictable they will ever be. Check the AppleCare+ price and per-incident fee shown at checkout, and weigh it against how you treat phones. It is a reasonable purchase on this device for most people, and it is not a substitute for a case — cover pays for damage, a case reduces how often it happens.
Trade-in
Apple offers trade-in credit on eligible devices during preorder. Values depend on model and condition and change over time, so get your quote in the Apple Store app when you set up your order. If you are trading in, keep your current phone in good condition until it is collected — the quote is conditional on the assessment.
Carriers
You choose a carrier when you set up your preorder. Carrier deals can reduce the upfront cost but usually tie you to a plan. If you want flexibility — especially given the eSIM-only design — compare the carrier offer against buying unlocked.
Build your preorder
Preorder builder
Answer three questions for a storage pick and a complete order with protection.
1. How much of your current phone's storage do you use?
2. How do you treat your phones?
3. Do you want to carry cards in your case?
What to order alongside it
The phone arrives on 23 October. The first week is when a new device is most likely to be dropped, because you are still learning how it handles — and this one weighs 254 g and folds. Order protection now, not after it arrives.
What Apple sells alongside it
Apple offers two iPhone Duo cases in the Apple Store app: the iPhone Duo Case at $79 and the Folio with Kickstand at $129. Both have built-in magnets; neither holds cards or a stylus; only the Folio has a stand and hinge cover, and it encloses the outer display. Apple sells no screen protector for the Duo. If you want guaranteed fit on day one and do not need cards or a stand, adding Apple's $79 case to your preorder is a perfectly reasonable choice. See our full comparison of Apple's cases against the alternatives.
Our recommendations
Magnetic Hinge Protection Case for iPhone Duo
$49.95
Covers the closed spine — the one high-exposure surface a case can fix — keeps the outer display usable, and has a magnet array built in. Gold and Silver finishes pair with either Star White or Night Sky.

3-Pack Outer Screen Protector for iPhone Duo
$19.95 — $6.65 each
Apple does not sell a screen protector for the iPhone Duo. This covers the 5.4″ outer display, which faces pockets and keys. Fit it on day one, before the screen picks up its first scratch. We deliberately do not sell an inner-screen protector — that display's nano-texture finish should be left alone.

MagSafe Leather Wallet Case for iPhone Duo
$49.95
Neither Apple case holds cards. This one carries them on the outer panel, so the Duo still closes flat. Brown pairs well with Night Sky; Black with Star White.

Full Protection Kickstand Case With Stylus for iPhone Duo
$49.95
Full spine wrap, side protection, a kickstand and a stylus. The most coverage we sell, and the bulkiest — worth it if you already know you are hard on phones.

Preorder mistakes to avoid
- Deciding on the day. Build the order in the Apple Store app from 12 October. Supply is expected to be tight.
- Forgetting the eSIM conversion. If your carrier needs a request, you cannot activate the phone until it is done.
- Buying 256GB to save $200 when your current phone is already half full. You will feel it within a year.
- Buying 2TB "just in case." $1,200 above 256GB is a lot of insurance against storage you may never use.
- Waiting for the phone before ordering a case. The first week is the riskiest.
- Buying a generic foldable case. A case for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 will not fit — the iPhone Duo is 84.1 × 117.8 mm folded, the Z Fold 8 is 81.9 × 123.9 mm.
- Buying an inner-screen protector. The 7.6″ inner display has a custom nano-texture finish. Protect the outer display only.
- Peeling anything off the inner display on day one. If there is a layer on it, treat it as part of the screen unless Apple's instructions say otherwise.
After you order
Between preorder and delivery:
- Watch your order status in the Apple Store app. Early first-batch orders typically show a delivery date of release day; later ones move out.
- Make sure your case and protector have shipped.
- Confirm your eSIM transfer path with your carrier.
- Make a fresh backup the night before delivery.
On the day it arrives: fit the outer screen protector on the bare phone first, then the case. Before you close it for the first time, check nothing is resting on the inner display.
Why take preorder advice from a case store
We told you Apple's $79 case is a reasonable preorder add-on. If guaranteed fit is what you want, add it.
We told you not to overbuy storage, and not to buy an inner-screen protector — both things that would be easy to sell you.
We work on one device. Everything we sell is built for the iPhone Duo.

Friday 16 October 2026 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time, which is 8 a.m. Eastern, 1 p.m. in London, 4 p.m. in Dubai and 5:30 p.m. in India. You can set up your preorder in the Apple Store app from 12 October.
When is the iPhone Duo released?
Friday 23 October 2026 in the US and the first launch countries, with 28 more countries and regions following on Friday 30 October.
How much does the iPhone Duo cost?
In the US: $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB.
Which iPhone Duo storage should I buy?
512GB for most buyers. It doubles the base storage for $200. Choose 1TB if you regularly shoot 4K video or keep large offline libraries, and 256GB if you rely heavily on iCloud and upgrade often.
What colours does the iPhone Duo come in?
Two: Star White and Night Sky.
Does the iPhone Duo have a SIM card slot?
Launch coverage reports that the iPhone Duo is eSIM-only. Check Apple's tech specs page for your region, and if you use a physical SIM, ask your carrier about converting to eSIM before the phone arrives.
Should I get AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo?
For most people it is a reasonable purchase on this device. Apple has not published iPhone Duo repair pricing, and repair costs on a first-generation folding phone are hard to predict. It does not replace a case — it pays for damage rather than preventing it.
Can I preorder a case before I get the iPhone Duo?
Yes, and it is worth doing so the case arrives with the phone. Apple's own cases are available in the Apple Store app, and third-party cases are available now. No case from any maker has been fit-tested on retail hardware yet.
Does Apple sell a screen protector for the iPhone Duo?
No. Apple sells two iPhone Duo cases but no screen protector. Protect the outer 5.4″ display; leave the inner folding display's finish alone.
