 If you want a leather case for your iPhone Duo, Apple is not an option. Apple stopped using leather across its product line in 2023, citing the environmental footprint of tanning — the water, energy and chromium-based chemicals involved.

 It replaced leather with FineWoven, a microtwill made from 68% post-consumer recycled polyester, which drew immediate criticism for pilling, attracting lint, poor abrasion resistance and inconsistent magnet retention.

 Apple discontinued FineWoven entirely in September 2024, and in 2025 introduced TechWoven, a 100% recycled polyester material that reviewers considered an improvement.

What Apple has not done is bring leather back. There is no first-party leather iPhone case, and there is no first-party leather iPhone Duo case. The entire premium leather category for this device belongs to third-party makers.

Most leather case advice is written for slab phones, and it does not transfer cleanly. Four things change on the iPhone Duo.

1. You handle a foldable far more than a slab phone

Every notification check is an open-and-close cycle. Over a day that is dozens of handling events on top of normal use, and each one is friction against whatever material covers the device. That is the single strongest argument for leather here: it is the one common case material that improves under friction rather than degrading. Plastic scuffs, silicone picks up shine at the contact points, woven textiles pill. Leather darkens where your thumb sits and that darkening reads as character rather than damage.

Apple's own experience is instructive on the alternative. The material it chose to replace leather drew complaints about fraying and lint within weeks of release, and was withdrawn inside a year.

2. A 254 g device needs grip

The iPhone Duo weighs 254 g and pairs a Grade 5 titanium frame with Ceramic Shield 2 glass — both confirmed by Apple, and both slippery. You are opening and closing that weight one-handed, repeatedly. Leather has a natural coefficient of friction that polished titanium does not. This is a practical safety argument, not an aesthetic one: the cases people drop are the ones that slip during a handling motion, and on a foldable the handling motion happens all day.

3. Leather must not wrap the hinge

This is the detail that separates a leather case designed for a foldable from one adapted from a folio pattern. A continuous leather panel stretched across the spine will crease along the fold line, and a crease in leather eventually becomes a crack. It is the same failure you see on a wallet that has been folded in the same place for years, compressed into months by a device folded dozens of times a day.

A leather case for the iPhone Duo should use two separate leather panels with a dedicated spine section, so the leather itself never becomes the hinge. If you are looking at a leather case whose photos show one unbroken leather surface across the fold, that is the one specification to ask about before buying.

4. Leather sits between the magnet and the accessory

Any backing material adds distance between a magnet array and whatever you attach to it, and magnetic hold strength falls off sharply with distance. Apple's FineWoven cases were criticised for inconsistent magnet retention for related reasons. A leather case is thicker than a bare polycarbonate shell, so expect a magnetic wallet or mount to hold slightly less firmly than on a thin plastic case. For chargers and wallets this is a non-issue; for a car mount on rough roads it is worth knowing before you buy.

How to care for a leather iPhone Duo case

Leather rewards a small amount of maintenance. Five things, in order of how much they matter:

1. Let it dry naturally. If it gets wet, blot and air dry away from heat. A radiator or hairdryer will stiffen and crack it.
2. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun. A car dashboard in summer is the fastest way to fade and dry a leather case. This is also where a magnetic car mount does the most damage over time.
3. Condition sparingly, two or three times a year. A small amount of quality leather conditioner on a soft cloth. Over-conditioning darkens unevenly.
4. Remove cards before wireless charging. Heat is the risk, and leather insulates, so a leather wallet case traps more of it against the cards than a plastic one would.
