iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 (2026): The First Year Two Wide Foldables Compete

 Something unusual happened in 2026. Samsung redesigned its mainstream Fold into a short, wide, passport-shaped device and launched it on 22 July. Seven weeks later, on 9 September, Apple announced its first foldable in essentially the same format. For the first time, two flagship foldables from the two largest phone makers share a form factor — and buyers actually have a like-for-like choice.

This comparison uses published specifications from both companies rather than impressions. The verdict is genuinely split: Samsung wins on the numbers most people check first, Apple wins on the one that decides how long a foldable survives. Which matters more depends entirely on you.

All figures are from the manufacturers' published specifications and contemporaneous reporting. Where Apple has not published a figure, we have left it blank rather than estimate.

The three differences that actually decide this

1. Weight and thickness — Samsung, clearly

53 grams is not a rounding error. It is roughly a quarter of the Z Fold 8's total weight, and you feel it every time you hold either device open one-handed. Samsung's marketing calls the Z Fold 8 its lightest Fold yet, and reviewers described it as the lightest book-style foldable available at launch — lighter than several conventional flagship phones, including Samsung's own Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Apple's titanium frame is part of why the Duo is heavier. Titanium is stronger than aluminium but denser. That is a deliberate trade, not an oversight — but it is a trade, and Samsung came out on the side most buyers notice in a shop.

2. Dust sealing — Apple, decisively

This is the specification most comparisons bury and it is the one that determines how a foldable ages.

The first digit is the dust digit. Apple's 6 is the maximum: dust-tight. Samsung's 4 means protection against solid objects greater than 1 mm — which is to say, protection against things you could see coming, not against dust.

Why this matters more on a foldable than on any other phone. Grit that reaches a hinge mechanism does not announce itself. It grinds. The symptom appears weeks or months later as a gritty fold action or a line across the inner display, and the repair is among the most expensive the hardware can require. Samsung has improved this generation over generation, and IP48 is a real rating — but IP68 on a folding device is a genuine engineering achievement and Apple should get credit for it.

3. Price and ceiling — depends how much storage you want

The Z Fold 8 starts $100 lower at $1,899 against the Duo's $1,999, and tops out at $2,499 for 1TB against the Duo's $3,199 ceiling. On entry price the gap is narrow enough to be noise for most buyers. At the top of the range Apple is asking substantially more.

Same format, completely different cases

Both devices are wide foldables, both have 7.6″ inner displays, and both are roughly passport-shaped. It would be reasonable to assume cases might transfer. They do not, and the numbers show why:

The Duo is 2.2 mm wider, 6.1 mm shorter and 1.6 mm thicker. Every one of those differences is far outside case tolerance, before you account for entirely different camera layouts, button positions and hinge geometry. No case, screen protector or camera protector crosses between these two devices. If you are switching from a Z Fold to a Duo, none of your accessories come with you.

Which should you buy

• Have had it since August and are happy — there is no reason to switch

Buy the iPhone Duo if you

• Are in the Apple ecosystem, which for most people settles it before any spec sheet
• Care about long-term durability, where dust-tight sealing is the meaningful advantage
• Want the titanium frame and are willing to carry the weight that comes with it
• Value resale, where iPhones have historically held value better

Wait if you

• Are on a working foldable already and are not bothered by it — second-generation foldables typically refine what first-generation devices get wrong, and Apple's second Duo will benefit from what this one teaches them

How the market is likely to split

Independent forecasts give a sense of scale. Counterpoint Research expects Apple to ship up to 6 million foldables in 2026 — from a selling window of only about ten weeks — taking roughly a quarter of the foldable market and second place behind Samsung in its first year. Samsung's initial 2026 production plan was reported at around 2.8 million Z Fold 8 Wide units, later raised toward 4 million after additional component orders, plus about 2 million Z Fold 8 Ultra. Global preorders across the Z8 series were estimated at 4.7 to 5.2 million, the highest ever for the line.

The read: Apple entering in a ten-week window at roughly the same volume Samsung achieves across a full year tells you the foldable category is about to get much larger. For buyers, that means better accessory choice and faster software optimisation on both platforms.

If you chose the iPhone Duo

Three things are worth knowing before you buy protection for it, all of which follow from the specifications above.

The dust problem is largely handled in hardware. IP68 means you do not need a case primarily as a dust barrier. What a case genuinely prevents on this device is impact on the narrow closed spine and abrasion along the fold edge.

Thinness makes bulk expensive. Starting from 11.3 mm folded, a standard shell adds 15–20%, and a full hinge wrap over 30%. Proportionally that is far more than the same case adds to a conventional phone, so choose coverage deliberately rather than defaulting to maximum.

Do not put tempered glass on the inner display. The 7.6″ panel is flexible and rigid glass will not survive repeated folding on it. The outer 5.4″ display uses Ceramic Shield 2 and takes glass normally.
