The 7.6″ inner screen is the most expensive part of the iPhone Duo, and no case covers it. It folds, so tempered glass is out. It already has a layer on top from Apple, so peeling things off is risky. This guide covers what’s already on the screen, what you can safely add, and when an inner screen protector is worth having.
- Never remove Apple’s cover layer. It comes on the screen from the factory and hides the crease. Apple says it can be replaced, but replacement is a service job ($19 with AppleCare+ in the US).
- Never use tempered glass on the inner screen. Glass can’t fold. Only a flexible film, such as hydrogel, can.
- A hydrogel film on top of the cover layer is the safe way to add scratch and fingerprint protection. A privacy film also blocks side views of a screen that is roughly twice the size of the outer one.
- Our pick: the Duo Case Co Privacy Screen Protector, a hydrogel set for the inner and outer screens, $24.95.
What’s already on the iPhone Duo inner screen
Apple puts a nano-texture cover layer on top of the folding display. Its job is to hide the crease and cut glare. Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, has said it is not a permanent part: it’s designed to be replaced when it wears or when the crease starts to show more. With AppleCare+ in the US, a replacement costs $19. Apple hasn’t published the price without AppleCare+.
That changes the question. You aren’t protecting bare display glass. You’re protecting a consumable layer, so the films that make sense go on top of it and never replace it.
Inner screen protection: your options compared
| Option | Folds with the screen | Privacy | Keeps Apple’s matte feel | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple’s cover layer only | Yes | — | Yes | Every scratch lands on the layer; replacement is a service visit |
| Hydrogel privacy film on top (ours) | Yes, it’s flexible | Blocks side views | No, any film changes the surface | Low. The screen looks a little darker head-on. |
| Tempered glass | No | Depends | No | Don’t. It can’t fold, so it will crack or lift at the hinge. |
| Removing Apple’s layer | — | Never. You lose the crease-hiding layer and risk the display. | ||
Who can see your iPhone Duo screen?
Opened, the Duo is a small tablet. Its screen is roughly twice the area of the outer screen, so the person in the next seat can read it easily. A privacy film narrows the angle the screen can be seen from. Pick a place and see who can read it.

Top-down view. Illustrative: privacy films usually look dark beyond about 30° from straight on. Exact angles vary by film.
Where are you?
Screen
What a privacy film can’t do: someone standing right behind you is looking almost straight on, so they can still see your screen. A privacy film blocks people beside you, not people over your shoulder.

The set includes a matching film for the 5.4″ outer screen.
- Flexible: made for a folding screen
- Privacy on both screens
- Works with every case, since no case covers the inner screen
- Screen looks slightly darker head-on
- Replaces the matte feel of Apple’s layer
- Doesn’t hide the crease
Already have a case with front glass? Eleven of our cases cover the outer screen. Use only the inner film from the set and keep the outer film as a spare. See cases with a built-in screen protector. Want clear protection for the outer screen with no privacy filter? Take the 3-pack outer screen protector.
How to apply a hydrogel film to the inner screen
Follow the instructions in the box. These general tips help with any hydrogel film on a foldable:
- Pick a dust-free room. A bathroom after a hot shower is best, because steam pulls dust out of the air.
- Open the Duo fully flat on a table. Never apply a film to a half-open screen.
- Clean the surface gently with the wipe provided, then lift any dust with the sticker. Don’t scrub Apple’s cover layer with anything abrasive.
- Line up the cutouts before you peel the backing. Start at one edge and lower the film slowly across the hinge line.
- Push bubbles out from the centre towards the edges with the card.
- Leave it open and flat for a few hours before folding. Small haze or micro-bubbles in hydrogel usually clear within a day or two.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put a screen protector on the iPhone Duo inner screen?
Yes, if it’s a flexible film such as hydrogel, applied on top of Apple’s factory cover layer. Tempered glass can’t be used on the inner screen because it can’t fold.
Should I remove the iPhone Duo’s pre-installed inner screen layer?
No. The nano-texture cover layer hides the crease and protects the display. Apple says it can be replaced, but by Apple or an authorised service provider. In the US it costs $19 with AppleCare+.
Does a privacy screen protector work on the iPhone Duo inner screen?
Yes. A privacy film narrows the viewing angle, so people beside you see a dark screen while you see it normally. The trade-off is a slightly darker image head-on. It doesn’t block someone directly behind you.
Will a screen protector hide the iPhone Duo crease?
Don’t buy any film expecting that. Apple’s cover layer is what handles the crease. A film protects that layer from scratches and fingerprints.
Is a screen protector worth it if AppleCare+ replaces the cover layer for $19?
It depends on how you use the phone. The $19 fee needs AppleCare+ and a service visit, and Apple hasn’t published the price without it. A film also adds privacy. If you mostly use the Duo at home and want the brightest screen, you can skip it.
Does an inner screen protector work with iPhone Duo cases?
Yes, with every case. No case covers the inner screen, so an inner film never clashes with one. On the outer screen, skip the outer film if your case already has front glass.
What is the best iPhone Duo inner screen protector?
For most people, the Duo Case Co Privacy Screen Protector at $24.95. It’s a flexible hydrogel set for the inner and outer screens, with a privacy filter and an anti-fingerprint finish.
